WhatsApp users can now fix those pesky typos within 15 minutes.
In an official announcement, Meta (formerly Facebook) revealed that editable messages are being rolled out on WhatsApp. Although the feature had been observed in beta versions for some time, WhatsApp’s blog confirmed its global release, stating that it will become available to all users in the upcoming weeks.
To utilize the feature, users can long-press the message they wish to edit and select the “edit” option. It’s important to note that messages can only be edited within a 15-minute timeframe, so older messages cannot be modified. When a message is edited, a small “edited” notice will appear alongside the timestamp, ensuring chat participants are aware of the changes made. This approach is similar to Apple’s implementation of the feature in iMessage last year.
While WhatsApp already allows users to delete messages, effectively enabling them to rectify mistakes by re-sending the corrected message, the deleted message is replaced with a notice saying “this message was deleted,” which can appear untidy. The introduction of editable messages provides a more seamless solution for typo corrections.
This addition of editable messages comes at a particularly eventful time for WhatsApp. This month alone, the messaging service has launched a dedicated app for Wear OS smartwatches, introduced new features for polls and captions, and announced a locked conversations feature.
As users eagerly anticipate the arrival of editable messages, WhatsApp continues to enhance its platform with a series of updates, catering to the diverse needs of its vast user base.
