Twitter’s TweetDeck Faces Issues as Musk Implements Tweet Limits

Elon Musk implemented read limits on Twitter to prevent data scraping, causing disruptions for users, particularly those on TweetDeck

Over the weekend, Elon Musk implemented read limits on Twitter to prevent data scraping, causing disruptions for users, particularly those on TweetDeck. Numerous users have reported problems with notifications and the loading of entire columns on the platform.

Initially, Musk enforced a daily limit of 6,000 tweets for verified users and 600 tweets for unverified users. However, he later raised these limits to 10,000 tweets and 1,000 tweets respectively. The impact of these read restrictions appears to be more pronounced within TweetDeck, which loads multiple tweets simultaneously through various columns.

Engineer Molly White observed that TweetDeck calls were returning multiple errors after the app had been open for a few minutes. Additionally, many users encountered difficulties with loading columns such as notifications, mentions, and likes, even though their home timelines were functioning.

Regarding the future of TweetDeck, the last official update from Twitter came in June 2022 when the company shut down the Mac app. Since Musk’s takeover, there have been no announcements about TweetDeck’s future. Speculation has persisted that the platform may transition into a paid feature.

In a separate move, Twitter recently restricted the viewing of tweets without a login to deter data scraping attempts for AI training purposes. Musk justified this as a temporary emergency measure due to data pillaging that had negatively impacted user experience. However, the restrictions imposed by Musk have also resulted in a compromised user experience, with users quickly reaching rate limits, including those who are verified and pay for the service.
