Glass manufacturer Corning launched the latest glass innovation product “Gorilla Glass Victus 2” on the 30th, constantly challenging the limits of glass.
James E. Hollis, deputy general manager of Corning’s global business and technology, said that this time, the drop resistance has been improved to withstand the rougher surface of the concrete while maintaining the scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass Victus.
Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 adopts a new glass composition and has passed the laboratory test of dropping up to 1 meter onto a simulated concrete surface.
Competing products of aluminosilicate glass from other manufacturers usually cannot pass the test below 0.5 meters; Glass Victus 2 also Passed the drop test on a simulated asphalt surface from a height of up to 2 meters, the scratch resistance is even 4 times higher than other aluminosilicate glass competitors.
Hollis revealed that this glass product is currently mainly used for mobile phones, because it is the easiest to put in a pocket, and it will be scratched and dropped. It will be expanded to tablets and laptops, or it will be used simultaneously on wearable devices or front-lens glass. , is currently negotiating with ODM factories, and is also designing. It is expected that there will be news within half a year at the earliest.
Regarding whether to expand to foldable mobile phones in the future, Hollis said that it has been discussed with other customers, and there are similar studies in the market, but the current peripheral technology still cannot achieve the situation of folding the entire glass in half, and it is still under discussion.
David Velasquez, vice president, and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass said that as everyone increasingly relies on clear, undamaged screen displays, the requirements for anti-scratch and drop resistance are also increasing.
Velasquez said that compared with four years ago, the weight of smartphones has increased by nearly 15%, and the screen size has increased by 10%, which increases the pressure on the protective glass and the risk of damage. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 redefines “hardness” for consumers and brand manufacturers Definition.
Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is currently being evaluated by multiple customers and is expected to be available within a few months; Gorilla Glass has been adopted in more than 45 major products and is designed to be used in more than 8 billion devices.
