Spotify Reportedly Explores Adding Full-Length Music Videos to Its App

In an effort to compete with Apple and YouTube, Spotify is considering the inclusion of full-length music videos within its streaming service

In an effort to compete with Apple and YouTube, Spotify is considering the inclusion of full-length music videos within its streaming service, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. While the company has engaged in discussions with potential partners, the details surrounding support for this feature and its potential release date remain undisclosed. Spotify has chosen not to comment on the matter at this time.

Currently, video content on Spotify is limited to podcasts, 30-second storytelling clips that enable artists to discuss their work, and 10-second looping GIFs that accompany songs. Earlier this year, the media giant introduced a home feed reminiscent of TikTok, but its primary focus is on music and podcast discovery rather than video consumption. Although Spotify previously experimented with incorporating television content from platforms like Comedy Central and ESPN, it failed to gain significant traction.

While the concept of adding music videos to streaming music services is not new, Apple Music has been offering this feature for years. Spotify’s potential addition of music videos would allow it to match Apple’s offering, potentially attracting users who would otherwise turn to YouTube for video content. Furthermore, it would enrich Spotify’s home feed and entice music enthusiasts from popular social networks such as Instagram and TikTok.

It is worth noting that music videos alone do not generate substantial direct revenue. YouTube, for instance, provides creators with a 55 percent share of ad revenue, averaging around $18 per 1,000 views. This amount is further divided among artists, labels, and other parties involved. Nevertheless, music videos serve as a supplementary source of income for musicians and enhance their exposure.

Spotify also faces the need to explore new revenue streams. Earlier this year, the company underwent significant layoffs, including a reduction of 200 employees from its podcast team. These decisions were made as Spotify encountered challenges stemming from the global economic climate and various business missteps. The addition of music videos could potentially bolster the company’s financial standing without requiring extensive production resources, as is the case with podcasts.
