PayPal Introduces Tap-to-Pay Support on Android for Venmo and Zettle Merchants in the U.S.

PayPal has announced the launch of a tap-to-pay feature for merchants using an Android phone, available through the Venmo and Zettle apps in the United States

Businesses can now accept contactless payments through Venmo and Zettle apps.

PayPal has announced the launch of a tap-to-pay feature for merchants using an Android phone, available through the Venmo and Zettle apps in the United States. This move follows a similar functionality introduced by PayPal in November last year, enabling businesses in the UK to accept payments by tapping cards or digital wallets.

While PayPal has begun rolling out support for tap to pay on Android with the Zettle app, Venmo for business profile users will experience a phased implementation over the next few months, with select businesses already utilizing the feature. Merchants can request early access to this functionality.

The tap-to-pay feature allows sellers to accept payments from cards or digital wallets such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, eliminating the need for additional hardware. PayPal applies a fee of 2.29% plus 9 cents for each sale made through the tap-to-pay method across Zettle and Venmo.

According to Ed Hallett, Head of Product, Microbusiness at PayPal, the introduction of Tap to Pay marks a significant step in democratizing in-person card payments, enabling users to start accepting card payments quickly and at no setup cost. Hallett emphasized the aim to provide millions of Venmo and PayPal Zettle businesses with frictionless payment options to drive sales.

In addition to Android support, PayPal is also extending tap-to-pay capabilities to iPhone users of Venmo for Business and Zettle in the United States. Although iOS has a larger market share in the country, PayPal intends to leverage Venmo’s expansive user base of 90 million individuals (non-business users) and offer them a hassle-free way to accept payments without complex setup requirements.

While Venmo currently leverages Zettle’s technology for tap-to-pay on Android, PayPal has not explicitly stated any plans for merging the two products. However, the company acknowledges the synergies between Venmo for Business and Zettle.

PayPal’s expansion of tap-to-pay products comes in response to rival Stripe’s introduction of a similar feature on Android phones in six countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., New Zealand, Australia, and Singapore. Stripe charges $0.10 per transaction for tap-to-pay transactions using its payment gateway.

The recent executive changes within PayPal, with CEO Dan Shulman stepping down in February and CFO Blake Jorgensen leaving the company for health reasons, have coincided with a decline in the fintech giant’s stock, which is currently at its lowest point in the last five years.
