OpenAI has made an exciting announcement on Twitter, revealing the expanded availability of the official ChatGPT mobile app in multiple countries. Initially, the app was exclusively accessible on iOS and limited to the United States. However, OpenAI has now extended its reach to Europe, South Korea, New Zealand, and more, allowing users in these regions to download the app from the App Store.
The ChatGPT mobile app offers a seamless experience, serving as a convenient platform to engage with the chatbot. It remains true to its purpose, enabling users to interact with the chatbot without any distractions such as advertisements.
The list of countries where the ChatGPT app is now accessible includes Albania, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. At present, the app is exclusively available for iOS users, with OpenAI promising an upcoming Android version.
Upon launching the app, users are presented with a text box at the bottom of the screen, allowing them to type their queries, similar to sending a message on any messaging app. While text input is the primary method, users also have the option to leverage Apple’s built-in speech recognition or OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition system for voice input.
Once a message is sent, OpenAI processes the request and provides an AI-generated response. Users can further engage in the conversation by providing additional information or requesting a different answer. The app supports code blocks, and users can easily copy and paste responses.
By default, ChatGPT retains chat history for model training purposes. When this feature is enabled, users can also access their conversations on desktop. It’s important to note that disabling data sharing also results in the loss of chat history.
Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus will enjoy enhanced capabilities, including access to GPT-4, and can expect faster response times on the mobile app. ChatGPT Plus is available for $20 per month on desktop and can be purchased as an in-app subscription in the local currency (€22.99 per month in Europe, £19.99 in the UK, etc.).
The timing of this expansion, which encompasses various European countries, is notable, considering OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s meetings with European heads of states, such as Emmanuel Macron of France, Pedro Sánchez of Spain, and Rishi Sunak of the UK. Altman has expressed concerns about hastily implemented AI regulatory policies. With the wider availability of ChatGPT in Europe, individuals can now simply say, “just download the app” to access its features.
