Nvidia and MediaTek have joined forces to develop cutting-edge technology for advanced vehicle infotainment systems that incorporate features like video streaming, gaming, and artificial intelligence-driven interactions with drivers. The partnership, announced at the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, entails integrating Nvidia graphic processing unit chiplets and software into the system-on-chips supplied by MediaTek to automakers for their infotainment displays.
By incorporating Nvidia software, MediaTek systems can seamlessly interface with automated driving systems based on Nvidia technology. This integration enables dashboard displays to provide real-time visuals of the vehicle’s surroundings, while driver monitoring cameras ensure enhanced safety measures.
During a news conference in Taipei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the need for long-term partnerships in the automotive industry, given the extended product cycles of car manufacturers. He expressed confidence in the collaboration’s ability to provide automotive industry partners with reliable and high-quality solutions, stating that the partnership would deliver chips capable of powering every aspect of a vehicle.
Automakers are increasingly incorporating sophisticated in-vehicle displays and entertainment systems, featuring gaming capabilities, voice-activated AI functionalities, driver monitoring systems, and displays related to automated driving. Notably, Qualcomm, MediaTek’s primary competitor in the smartphone market, has also been actively pursuing collaborations with automakers. Earlier this year, Qualcomm and SalesForce announced their partnership to develop a connected vehicle platform.
By partnering with MediaTek, Nvidia gains broader access to the $12 billion infotainment system-on-chip market. According to MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai, the first products resulting from this collaboration are expected to launch in late 2025.
Nvidia has primarily focused on premium automotive brands like Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover, while MediaTek, rooted in the Android smartphone chip sector, specializes in supplying its Dimensity Auto technology to more affordable mass-market vehicle lines. MediaTek’s strengths lie in mobile connectivity and Android systems, providing opportunities for Nvidia to expand into untapped market segments.
While specific automotive customers were not disclosed, the partnership between Nvidia and MediaTek sets the stage for an exciting advancement in connected car technology. By leveraging their respective expertise, the companies aim to deliver innovative solutions that enhance the in-car experience and contribute to the future of the automotive industry.
