Nintendo and DeNA have officially launched their joint venture, Nintendo Systems, which was announced late last year. However, the purpose of the company remains unclear. The only information available is on the official website, which states that the company will work towards “strengthening the digitalization of Nintendo’s business” and creating “value-added services.”
The relationship between Nintendo and DeNA goes back to 2015 when DeNA developed several mobile titles based on Nintendo IPs. This partnership enabled the release of popular smartphone games such as Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Therefore, it is likely that Nintendo Systems will develop and publish upcoming mobile titles.
Apart from developing mobile games, DeNA is also responsible for some of the infrastructure of Nintendo Accounts services. Nintendo has announced that they will continue to use dedicated Nintendo Accounts in the future, so it is possible that Nintendo Systems will help keep everything in-house. The website suggests that Nintendo Systems will assist with the “development and operation of systems related to the digital part of Nintendo’s business.”
However, it is unclear whether the company will only deal with accounts management or if it will play a more significant role in Nintendo’s future digital operations. We have reached out to Nintendo for more information and will update this post when we know more.
In the meantime, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the sequel to Breath of the Wild, which is due to come out soon. With the launch of Nintendo Systems, we can expect exciting developments in the future of Nintendo’s digital operations.
