South Korean display manufacturer LG Display (LGD) announced on the 8th that it has launched the world’s first 12-inch high-resolution stretchable display that can be stretched, folded, and twisted without deformation or damage 14 inches.
LGD emphasized that this is the industry’s first display to achieve 20% stretchability, 100ppi resolution, and RGB full color, using a highly elastic film-type substrate, made of a material similar to special silicon used in contact lenses, with rubber bands similar elasticity, so it can be stretched up to 14 inches.
This display uses Micro LEDs under 40 microns as the light source to ensure high resolution and durability. It can not only withstand major external shocks but also has a resolution that is competitive with displays on the market.
LGD pointed out that because of its free form, this display can be used as a solution beyond existing foldable and rollable technologies; in addition, this screen is different from the traditional linear wiring system, and its circuit structure adopts a flexible S-shaped spring wiring system, Like a spring, it can withstand repeated changes in shape.
According to LGD, such displays can be easily attached to curved objects such as skin, clothing, furniture, cars, and airplanes in the future, expanding the potential of displays in industries such as fashion, wearables, mobile and gaming.
Soo-young Yoon, executive vice president, and chief technology officer of LGD, believes that this technology will help improve the competitiveness of South Korea’s display technology and continue to lead the industry’s paradigm shift.
