Taking into account the global obsession with facial recognition technology, major Korean technology company Samsung is reported to be working on a facial recognition camera system that includes two cameras under the screen.
The new technology was revealed in a patent application filed by Samsung to KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) in March 2021. The document in question was published last week and obtained by a Dutch newspaper.
The new technology can help to obtain multiple images of the user from two angles to create a better 3D model of the face and use it for authentication purposes.
The report said that Samsung included the new technology on its Galaxy Fold series of phones, but only for experiment purposes. The patent for the new technology does not mention many details.
However, the document does show a mockup of a regular ‘Fold’ phone with two cameras; One at the top and one at the bottom.
The patent also deals with measuring the size of the pupil of the eye. According to the report, pupil size should vary depending on lighting conditions, and this feature could be used as an additional security measure to bolster the system against using things like photos or masks to deceive face authentication.
