Meta Faces Twitter’s Lawsuit Threat Over Threads App

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is facing the threat of a lawsuit from Twitter less than 24 hours after the launch of its new app, Threads

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is facing the threat of a lawsuit from Twitter less than 24 hours after the launch of its new app, Threads. Twitter accuses Meta of recruiting former Twitter employees to develop the platform, sparking allegations of unlawful misappropriation of trade secrets and intellectual property.

Since its debut, Threads, a text-based platform similar to Twitter, has gained over 30 million sign-ups. In response, Twitter’s lawyer sent a letter to Meta’s CEO, demanding immediate cessation of the use of Twitter’s trade secrets and confidential information. The letter emphasizes Twitter’s intent to enforce its intellectual property rights and warns of potential civil remedies and injunctive relief.

The letter alleges that Meta hired numerous former Twitter employees who had access to trade secrets and confidential information, assigning them to develop a rival app in violation of state and federal law and their ongoing obligations to Twitter.

Meta’s communications director denied the accusations, stating that none of the Threads engineering team members were former Twitter employees.

Threads is among several Twitter competitors that have gained traction, with Meta being the most notable. Twitter’s swift action against the platform underscores its significance.

Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, publicly supported the claims made in Twitter’s letter, emphasizing the importance of fair competition.

Twitter’s CEO also took a jab at Threads, highlighting that the unique Twitter community cannot be duplicated.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, broke his decade-long Twitter silence with a humorous Spider-Man meme, acknowledging the resemblance between Threads and Twitter.

With Twitter facing criticism for its decisions, there is a strong demand for an alternative. While Mastodon and Bluesky have generated buzz, Threads has witnessed faster adoption rates.

Threads is currently available on iOS and Android in 100 countries, excluding the EU due to data privacy concerns. Users can access the app using their Instagram login credentials, with their account details seamlessly transitioning to Threads.
