Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies is extending its partnership with legacy automakers as it expands its presence in the auto industry. The company’s Smart Car CEO, Richard Yu, announced at the China EV 100 forum in Beijing that Huawei would team up with Chery Automobile, BAIC Motor, and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group to jointly develop and manufacture Aito-branded electric vehicles. This comes after Huawei already formed a partnership with Seres Group to produce Aito cars.
Under the Aito brand, Huawei plans to release a range of models, including sedans, SUVs, and multipurpose vehicles. Yu emphasized that Huawei would “fully use the automakers’ resources of production capacity” to achieve this objective.
In 2022, Seres sold 80,000 Aito cars featuring Huawei’s HarmonyOS system, a significant increase from the previous year, according to the company’s filings. Huawei’s Chairman, Eric Xu, reiterated at a press conference that the company’s focus is not to make cars but rather to help other automakers make better vehicles.
However, Huawei’s expansion plans have been hampered by the series of export controls imposed by the United States, citing security risks associated with the company, which Huawei denies. These restrictions have barred Huawei from buying essential components and using Google’s Android operating system. Furthermore, the sanctions have affected Huawei’s partnerships with global automakers, who have stopped using Huawei’s vehicle connectivity technologies in the past two years, according to Yu.
Despite these challenges, Huawei remains optimistic about its expansion into the electric vehicle industry. By collaborating with established automakers, the tech giant can leverage their production capabilities to bring Aito-branded vehicles to market.
It’s worth noting that Huawei is not the only tech giant seeking to enter the EV market. Rival companies such as Apple and Google are also exploring opportunities in this space.
