Google is reportedly in a race to develop a new AI-powered search engine in response to renewed competition from Microsoft and OpenAI. The company aims to offer a more personalized experience by anticipating user preferences, according to The New York Times. While the project has no clear timetable, Google is also working on new AI features for its existing search engine, codenamed “Magi.”

Among the features being developed are a chatbot that can answer software engineering questions and generate code snippets, as well as a music search feature through chatbot conversations. Over 160 employees have been assigned to the redesign, with other additions in various stages of development, such as the Chrome feature “Searchalong.” This feature would allow a chatbot to provide contextual information based on the webpage being viewed, such as recommendations for nearby attractions when searching for accommodation on Airbnb. Other experimental features, such as “GIFI” and “Tivoli Tutor,” would enable users to prompt Google Image Search for image generation and engage in language learning conversations with a chatbot, respectively.

Google plans to announce Magi next month and introduce additional features in the fall, possibly at I/O 2023. The company aims to offer these features to one million users in the US initially, with plans to expand availability to 30 million users by the end of the year.

A Google spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to bringing AI-powered features to Search in a responsible and helpful manner. The importance of Magi for Google is underscored by reports that Samsung is considering making Bing the default search engine on its devices, which has reportedly caused panic at Google. Google’s search agreement with Samsung is estimated to be worth $3 billion annually, and its agreement with Apple, also up for renewal this year, has been subject to frequent antitrust scrutiny.
