Elon Musk Announces Plans for Free Trial of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving System in North America

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently shared his intentions to extend access to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system to drivers throughout North America and other parts of the world

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently shared his intentions to extend access to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system to drivers throughout North America and other parts of the world. While FSD is technically still in beta, it automates certain driving tasks on city streets and highways, requiring drivers to remain alert and ready to take over control of the vehicle at any time. Musk stated that once the system is “super smooth,” Tesla will offer a one-month free trial to all North American customers before extending the offer to the rest of the world. However, there is no specific timeline for this expansion beyond North America.

The FSD system is powered by deep neural networks and requires vast amounts of driving data to train and improve. By offering a free trial of the software to every Tesla in North America, Tesla can collect another significant chunk of driving data while promoting the software’s capabilities. Musk also revealed plans for the next version of FSD, which will have “end-to-end AI” capabilities.

Outside North America, Tesla’s access to FSD is limited by stricter regulations. Currently, drivers only have access to Autopilot, Tesla’s standard ADAS that features automatic steering, braking, and navigation to highway on-ramps and off-ramps. The Autopilot system is a less advanced version of FSD and is not allowed on public roads.

Tesla has faced criticism and lawsuits in the past over its Autopilot and FSD systems. The FSD and Autopilot systems have been the subject of multiple federal investigations, and the company is currently embroiled in a lawsuit from the family of an Apple engineer who died in a car crash allegedly caused by the Autopilot system. Despite these challenges, Tesla is moving ahead with its plans to offer FSD to more customers, including a potential large-scale rollout in Asian markets like China.
