WhatsApp is expanding its capabilities with a new screen-sharing feature, taking inspiration from work-oriented video calls platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. According to WABetaInfo, the messaging app is currently in the process of deploying this feature, enabling users to record and display their screen contents during video calls.
The screen-sharing feature is represented by an icon of a phone with an outward-pointing arrow, conveniently positioned alongside familiar tools like camera switching, muting, and video disabling at the bottom of WhatsApp calls. Upon clicking the new button, a prompt appears, presenting the option to “Start recording or casting with WhatsApp?” accompanied by a disclaimer stating that the company will have access to any passwords, photos, or payment details shown on the screen. Once you agree, simply click “Start now,” and you can choose to stop sharing your screen at any point during the call.
Presently, screen sharing is only accessible to a limited group of Android beta testers. However, WhatsApp plans to expand its availability to more users in the coming weeks. It’s important to note that this feature may not be compatible with older Android models, larger group calls, or individuals who haven’t downloaded the latest version of WhatsApp. For iPhone and iPad users who prefer alternative options, Apple introduced a similar screen-sharing capability for FaceTime calls in January.
With this new screen-sharing feature, WhatsApp is enhancing its functionality to meet the diverse needs of its users.
