Tesla’s highly anticipated second-generation Roadster, an all-electric sports car that caused a stir with its surprise unveiling in 2017, is now expected to enter production next year, according to CEO Elon Musk. Speaking at the company’s annual shareholder meeting, Musk expressed hope that the long-awaited Roadster would finally hit the production line in 2023, after several delays.
Initially slated for a 2020 release, the Roadster faced setbacks as Tesla prioritized other vehicle models, such as the Model 3 and Model Y. Musk acknowledged that the engineering and design of the Roadster are still in progress and cautioned that the projected timeline is not a firm commitment.
While the Roadster is regarded as the “cherry on the icing on the cake,” Musk stressed that it would not significantly contribute to Tesla’s revenue but could offer modest profitability. Despite its limited financial impact, the Roadster is anticipated to be an exceptional vehicle.
Tesla’s first-generation Roadster, introduced in 2006 and produced in 2008, played a vital role in establishing the company’s reputation as an electric vehicle pioneer. However, it was the release of the Model S in 2012, a luxury vehicle with higher production volume, that solidified Tesla’s success.
The second-generation Roadster caught the world’s attention when it unexpectedly debuted during the Tesla Semi event in 2017. Promising impressive acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds and a starting price of $200,000, the Roadster garnered significant interest. Attendees at the event were even offered test rides in the Roadster upon placing a $50,000 deposit.
Over time, Musk has continued to enhance the Roadster’s specifications. In 2018, he tweeted about the inclusion of a SpaceX option package featuring small rocket thrusters. Subsequently, he mentioned the SpaceX option again when a plaque at the Peterson Museum suggested an even more mind-blowing acceleration of 0-60 mph in 1.1 seconds. Musk cautioned that the intense speed might not be suitable for individuals with medical conditions, comparing it to a thrilling roller coaster ride.
During the recent shareholder meeting, Musk reiterated his enthusiasm for the SpaceX option, emphasizing that his involvement with both Tesla and SpaceX would enable the Roadster to reach new heights.
